Hearing the Call in Tanzania
Through our affiliation with Hearing the Call, the NSHF supports international projects with specifically designated funds. Dr. McCormack is the Development Lead for Tanzania. Initiated in January of 2024, the program works alongside our Tanzanian colleagues to promote early identification and intervention services and to support best practices for hearing health care through training programs for audiologists and technical level providers.
In this country of over 65 million people, there are very few audiologists or hearing aids, especially in the rural areas. Currently, children with hearing loss are not identified until they enter school at age 6, well beyond the critical period for developing speech and language. Many hearing impaired children are ostracized, misunderstood and maltreated because there are no early identification and intervention services. Parents must choose who will benefit the most from the tuition based schooling. As a result, hearing impaired children without a means of communication are often left to languish in villages to do the menial chores.
Your donation designated for Tanzania will help us create a better future for hearing impaired children and adults in who currently live in silence.
